Phillips

This is the history of the Phillips family who lived in and around Cenarth in Carmarthenshire.  The link to the Morecroft family  is through the marriage of  my mother, Margaret Phillips,  to Graham Morecroft in 1940.

I have not been able to traced the Phillips family back very far as up to now it stops with my great grandfather,Thomas Phillips born in 1858.   However my great  grandmother’s side, Margaret Jones,  goes back to to  John Evans born about 1770 in Cenarth.

NB   –  due to the geography of Cenarth research has been difficult as it borders the three counties of  Carmarthenshire, Cardiganshire  [or Ceredigion as it is known now]  and Pembrokeshire.  At different times Cenarth has been recorded in each of them.   The River Teifi forms the boundary of Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion and cuts the village in half.   So, crossing the bridge in the village means that you cross from  Carmarthenshire on the one side to Ceredigion on the other.  More confusion!

Cenarth has been spelt Kenarth in some of the earlier official documents.

Main characters:

Margaret Jones 1849 – 1932

John Evans : Miller, Cenarth  1772

Henry Jones and Hannah Evans 1811 – 1891
